In order to churn out more lecturers and professors for the premier business schools and encourage research, the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, has doubled the stipend for its PhD programme in management.
The decision was taken at a Board of Governors meeting on December 23. The students will now get Rs 20,000 to Rs 24,000 per month along with a contingency grant of Rs 20,000 annually. Besides, they will also be provided a one-time grant for field study, laptop and opportunities to participate in international conferences.
"IIM-C has decided to double the stipend for its fellowship programme. We expect the step will encourage talented students with industry experience to opt for academics," said Bhaskar Chakraborty, Chairman, Fellow Programme and Research. After the stipend, which will be implemented from 2009, IIM-C will be offering the highest stipend among all the IIMs in the country.
As business schools are grappling with a shortage of skilled faculty, at present, the average annual intake in PhD programme in management is 10 to 15 students. Although there is no restriction on the intake, according to institute officials, the decision will increase the number of students opting for PhD.
The institute has also revised the rules of the fellowship programme. To provide more enriching academic experience to students, the institute will offer teaching assistantships, which will fetch them up to Rs 11,000 per month in addition to the monthly stipend.
Dinesh Varma, Chief Administrative Officer, IIM-Calcutta, said "We took this decision so that students can support their stay in the campus”.

Jamshedpur: Adityapur small industries facing block closures
Owners of around 600 of the 800 auto units in the Adityapur industrial area (AIA) supplying parts and spares to Tata Motors' plant here are a worried lot, having experienced two block closures from the auto major in November itself. Tata Motors, which turns out heavy commercial vehicles (HCVs) at its plant here, has in view of the current sluggish demand, decided to take a second block closure during the month, for five days between November 25 and 29. "Around 80% of us have shut down units and laid off workers," said Adityapur Small Industries Association (ASIA) President SN Thakur.
Taking the earlier shut down into consideration, the units would have effectively run for only 15 days during the month of November. Depending upon individual size and production capacities, the ancillary units together are estimated to take a hit in excess of Rs 500 crore during November as liabilities like payment of power bill, interest on bank loans/overdraft, payment to laid off workers including key personnel on half-pay basis, etc, cannot be avoided. Most affected are the small and big sheet metal and engineering units who work for suppliers of parts and spares to Tata Motors, and those supplying parts and spares like gears, axles, doors, etc, directly to the auto major. According to the ASIA president, most of the units have for some months now been already running at around one-third of their capacity, as Tata Motors has been turning out around 150-200 HCV chassis a day in recent months compared to around 600-650 units during this time last year. "We had already been victimised by low production and this block closures have come as a secondary hit," Tata Motors has already said that the slowdown in sales of its HCVs would call "for appropriate action from time to time to match the production with demand and avoid unnecessary build-up of inventories in the company or with its dealers".

Tata Motors removes 300 employees in Jamshedpur
Auto major Tata Motors has asked 300 temporary employees at its Jamshedpur unit not to report for duty from Monday (Oct 20).
Out of these 300 employees, 100 belong to the truck division, and 200 to the engine division.
Tata Motors said the decision had nothing to do with the current global economic meltdown and added that asking temporary staff to stay away was normal. "It is a routine affair and it has nothing to do with the global economy," said company spokesperson P.J. Singh.
“This is not first time we have asked temporary employees not to come on work. On rotation temporary employees are given work. Last month, we also regularised services of 250 temporary employees,” he said.

Sonal Munda- a tribal girl from Ranchi- Tops JNU MCA Entrance Exam
Thanks to Prabhatkhabar, through which I came to know this good news.
Sonal Munda did her BCA from St Xavier’s College Ranchi and has now topped the MCA Entrance Exam conducted by JNU.
For the very first time, it has happened that a student from Bihar/Jharkhand has achieved this outstanding remark.
Almost 2 lakhs candidates appeared for the entrance exam towards admission to MCA programme from JNU, which has just 35 seats nationwide.
Success of Sonal Munda is an inspiration for the students of Bihar & Jharkhand and specially to those who belong to tribal community.
At the same time, it is a big slap to those who comment like “SC/STs don’t have talent.”
Way to go Sonal... Keep it up!!

If you wish to face problems- go for Touch Broadband
In today’s cyberworld, there are hundreds of Internet Service Providers. All of them talk about providing best services available.
Here I am sharing some of my experience in this field. I am connected with a cyber café based in Jamshedpur, India. So, this post can be of some help to the people of Jharkhand state, who are willing to avail services of an Internet Service Provider.
If you are based in Jamshedpur and you are willing to have new connection or you are willing to switch to a new service provider, then..
“Never go for Touch Broadband”.
Touch Broadband basically operates in Jamshedpur, and works under VSNL. They are providing services from VSNL, under their own tag Touch Broadband.
They just promise to give you services par excellence. But the fact is once you become their client, you will have to face too many problems with your internet connectivity.
If you wish to have 15 days connection in a month, then you can go for Touch Broad.
Not only that.. in problematic days they are not going to listen your problems. Your phone calls and complains will just go unheard. Such is the greatness of Touch Broadband which operates in Steel City of India i.e. Jamshedpur. I wonder how people of Jamshedpur have taken services of Touch Broadband.
In a way, it can also be concluded that Touch Broadband is nullifying the good will of VSNL.

Jharkhand Government all set to give haircuts to students
The Jharkhand government is all set to give haircuts to students in state-run schools.
“School principals have been directed to hire part-time barbers to give the students haircuts in the schools. There are many poor students with long hair as their parents are unable to take them to barbers,” these are the words from Bandhu Tirkey, the state's human resource development minister.
He said: “The barbers will be available in school for at least three days every week.”
To implement the decision, 30,000-40,000 barbers will be needed as there are over 16,000 primary, middle and high schools in the state.
The barbers are happy with the decision. The have welcomed the decision. It will give employment to barbers and at the same time help the poor children of the state.
The state's HRD department is introducing several schemes to check school dropouts.
Earlier, Tirkey had announced poor students would have their birthdays celebrated in school.
'We have to make education attractive for the students and reduce the burden of the parents. Jharkhand is one of the backward states of the country and we need to improve literacy rate. Caring for poor students can help in improving the literacy rate,' he said.
Jharkhand has a literacy rate of 54 percent, compared to the national average of 65 percent.
